Or alternatively, what causes this error message when I try to run BAK with my custom DOS files? (autoexec.bat, config.sys, emm86, himem.sys, etc.):

I know there is a CDEX file titled "MSCDEXNT" in the WINNT\system32 folder, but VDMSound dos not seem to fully support this new version. Then, If everybody else has this problem, I'd like to know if and how I can get MSCDEX support in Windows XP.
BETRAYAL AT KRONDOR SETUP.EXE DRIVER
I think the problem (and ONLY think, I'm not fantastic at interpreting DOS problems) lies with the fact that the MSCDEX driver is being run through VDMSound (which, although it is a fantastic, is a generally slow program, you can hear problems with the tempo during MIDI emulation).įirst, I'd like someone else to try this, so I know it's not just me. I found no evidence of NPC voices either, although I suspect this is related to the slow loading problem. The CD music played (YES!) but it was terribly delayed, and each track started about 5 full seconds later than it should have. Then, I finally decided to start tinkering with VDMS Launchpad, and to my delight, I found an option for MSCDEX support. With VDMSound, no matter what I do, the game will not read the CD. I used to be able to run BAK with CD Music (on a previously owned XP-running machine) using the "custom DOS files method", but this no longer works, why, I do not know. Of course, I like the CD music a lot more. I have always been able to run Betrayal at Krondor with MIDI sound, using VDMSound.
